What the heck is a “People Leader Dashboard?”

Do you sometimes just get ideas popping into your head? Good ideas?

Explore those!

Working with a client about a year ago, I was thinking about how to help leaders keep track of what’s going on with their team members. Suddenly, the idea for a new tool came to me. I taught this to people in my leadership classes and refined it even more to be usable and helpful. Let me share this with you and you can see how it might be helpful. Feel free to try it out if it makes sense.

This “People Leader Dashboard” tool is a one-page Excel sheet that a leader can use to keep track of the assignments, performance situation, and engagement of each team member. (See the PDF version here. Reply to this newsletter for an Excel copy you can edit.)

Here is a Google Sheets version of the dashboard, as well.

Add this to your own big box of management tools. It fits into the Team Leadership success factor from the Technical Leadership Scorecard.

I strongly recommend sharing this information with the employee! Don’t just accept your own impression, but ask them how they are doing. Make sure their understanding of work assignments, inputs, outputs, and engagement level is reflected in what you are recording.

See the examples in the tool provided. (And have fun with the “employees” shown!)

Try it out. Let me know how it goes. Send me your questions and suggestions.

Keep using your own Sage powers to unleash your creativity and innovation!

Cheers,
–Steve
