Wanna be an IT Rock Star?
What the heck is a “Rock Star” in the IT world, anyway? And why do I talk about them? It’s about the energy they bring and the results and recognition they get for it. Rock stars in any field do some of these things:
Doesn’t that sound like fun? Like something you’d want to experience? (Get the Technical Rock Star Leadership Guide here) It does for me, and that’s why I encourage people to become rock stars in whatever they do. I just happen to have a special affinity for and focus on technical leaders, like in the IT field. I want you to be able to perform like a rock star in everything you do; especially if you are in a leadership role. I get warm fuzzies when people succeed. Ultimately, that’s my “Why.” That’s why I do what I do. Too often, we’ve got a lot of stressed-out IT workers performing heroics behind the scenes without recognition or appreciation every day. Because most people only pay attention to technology when it breaks, these miracle workers can be taken for granted. But IT Rock Stars are the ones pulling off the same or better heroic efforts, with less stress, and making it look easy and having fun while doing it. They also get recognition and respect for it. Now, think about leadership. Rock star leaders make rock stars out of each member of their teams. In doing so, they earn credibility, influence, and opportunities. Key Point: As the leader, it’s not about you. It’s about your team. Make your team into rock stars. Some will be lead guitarists or vocalists that front the band. Some will be the drummers keeping the pace for everyone. Others will be backup vocalists. It’s okay. Everybody has a part to play. You, the leader, orchestrate their performance. And when the customer or client needs their support, they come to you because they know you’ll get them results. To do this, you need to get mindsets, skill sets, and tools. You will be making them into rock stars by the way you treat them, by how you communicate with confidence, by how you read situations and set them up for success. All of this is learnable. Mindsets are foundational. You use your skills in different ways based on your mindset or attitude. One thing that helps improve performance, reduce stress, and build strong relationships is the Positive Intelligence® framework. This is very much like a mental operating system on which all kinds of leadership skills run as apps. This is what I want you to install for yourself. Open up that Technical Rock Star Leader Guide. Do the first steps. Formulate some questions. Dig into the research, if you like. Set up some time with me for a PQ Demo Session (no cost for this) and we’ll go over your unique situation. I’ll answer your questions, offer some tips and tools, and give you a look at what you could do. Commitment is showing up. Making a difference. For yourself, and for the people you lead and serve. Investigate this information and make the commitment to perform, feel, and connect better. Do this and you can become a rock star yourself and make each of your team members into rock stars. (If you are in an individual role, take the leadership language in the spirit of helping your teammates. Leadership isn’t about the title, it’s about what you do. You are a leader if you are helping people accomplish things that they couldn’t do without your influence.) Go out and become a rock star and let me hear the music! — When you are ready, here are three ways I can help:
